About this blog....

Our family is on a six month adventure in Costa Rica. Before leaving, our friends, the Cox family, gave us a precious gift... a photo scavenger hunt of things for us to discover and experience in Costa Rica. This is our account of how the scavenger hunt is going.... along with other pictures and thoughts about our time in Costa Rica.

Consider the "leaf cutting" ant... Devotional thought from Ethan

One of my favorite insects here is Costa Rica is the leaf cutter ant. These ants are incredible! They are so hard working! The leaf cutter queen can lay up to 30,000 eggs a day. One colony can have over 8 million ants in it. The entire colony consists of three types of ants, 1 queen and then workers (the females) and soldiers. They all work together. One next can be larger than a car!
What I love about these ants is that they are so hard working. Things that seem impossible.... they still try. One ant can carry 50 times its body weight! There are so many things we can learn from the leaf cutter ants. One thing they have taught me is that I should work hard at all the things I have to do right now, like studying and learning, spending time in God's word. The Bible has a lot to say about not being lazy. These ants are not lazy! Mom and I sat and watched a colony of these ants for a long time and every ant was working so hard. We couldn't believe how much they were carrying and how quickly they were working.
The Bible says:

Proverbs 6:6: Consider the ant, Oh sluggard. Consider her ways and be wise.
1 Corinthians 10:31 says:  So whether you ear or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
Colossians 3:23: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, and not for man.

These ants have inspired me to work harder, with all my heart, and to do it all for the glory of God.

These ant hills are near our home and we loved watching the ants work in this park, cutting leaves.
Once they cut their leaves, they take them into their nest and
farm them into an edible fungus that feeds the colony.

A different nest we found.

The little leaves you see on the path are all being carried by leaf cutters ants...

Our tour guide is holding a leaf cutter ant and the ant is holding up this huge leaf!

More leaf cutters hard at work!
