About this blog....

Our family is on a six month adventure in Costa Rica. Before leaving, our friends, the Cox family, gave us a precious gift... a photo scavenger hunt of things for us to discover and experience in Costa Rica. This is our account of how the scavenger hunt is going.... along with other pictures and thoughts about our time in Costa Rica.

*Updated* Joshua's 24 Prettiest Birds Seen in Costa Rica

During this time in Costa Rica I've developed a love for birds. Bird watching is my number one thing to do. I have loved looking for God's beautiful creation through birds. There is nothing else that can compare to God's magnificent animals. I have loved this time in Costa Rica watching for some of the most beautiful colorful birds. Today I want to show you some of the most pretty birds I've seen. Here are the top 23 out of the 113 birds I have spotted.
(This list will probably keep growing as I see more birds!)

24. Hepatic Tanager
Mom and I saw this bird on our morning walk near our house. It's easy to find this bird because of it's bright color.

23. Magnificent Frigatebird
This is the male and as you can see it is trying to impress a female. It's called animal courtship. My family and I saw these birds in a large pack in Punta Leona.
[Punta Leona is my favorite beach]
We love these pretty birds.

22. Orange-chinned Parakeet
These loud noisy birds nest across from our house. They greet my Mom and I when we go on our morning walks. We find these birds all around Costa Rica. We love these birds.

21. Red-lored Parrot
We love everything about these birds except that their really annoying squak. We find these usually on the Pacific side of Costa Rica. These birds fly in large packs from place to place.

20. Laughing Falcon
We saw this amazing bird at Rain Maker in Manuel Antonio.
This is our friend/ tour guide Dago's favorite bird.
Something special about this bird is that it can eat poisonous snakes without getting hurt.

19. Yellow Warbler
This bird we found at Punta Leona. It's easy to find this bird because its colors are so bright.

18. Speckled Tanager
This bird we found at Carara national park. This is the juvenile. Our tour guide was so excited to see it because he had never seen a juvenile
Speckled Tanager in Carara national park.

17. Blue Jay
I actually saw this bird in Mexico but I thought I'd put it on because it's a pretty bird.

 16. Blue-Napped Chlorophonia

The color to this bird is bright. I have seen this bird many times all in Monteverde.
15. Emerald Toucanet

We saw huge tree full of these amazing toucanets in Monteverde.
I was surprised how small they were compared to other
toucans we have seen. They were beautiful!

14. Baltimore Oriole
This bird we saw at Punta Leona, my backyard, on my morning walks and many times at Monteverde.
 We saw the female too.

13. Squirrel cuckoo
This beautiful bird we saw at Carara, on my morning walks and at monteverde. It's tail is the prettiest part.

Here is an interesting poster about the humming birds of Costa Rica we saw
at a hummingbird garden in La Paz.
My next three favorites are all humming birds.

12. Green violetear

On our morning walks is were we usually find these.
We love watching these birds fly from flower to flower.

11. Snowcap hummingbird
This bird I usually find in our back yard.
It's one of the smallest hummingbirds in Costa Rica.

10. Green-breasted Mango
This hummingbird we found at La paz waterfalls. It's probably the prettiest hummingbird I've seen.

9. Slaty-tailed Trogan
The trogans belong to the Quetzal family. We found this bird at Carara.

8. Baird's Trogan
I have seen this bird two times both in Carara. I love the trogans.

7. Scarlet Macaw
When you think of Costa Rica you think of the Scarlet Macaw. This is one of my favorite birds. We have seen this bird on the Atlantic to the Pacific and in middle of Costa Rica. Scarlet Macaws are red, blue, yellow and white. Scarlet Macaws mate for life. We took this picture in Tarcoles near the ocean.

6. Black-mandibled Toucan

This bird we found on the Caribbean all the way to Carara National Park.

5. Blue-crowned Motmot

The Blue-crowned Motmot is probably the most pretty bird I see regularly. It is my favorite bird. We find these everywhere. On the way home from Monteverde we spotted one that way moving its tail side to side, like the pendulum of a clock.

4. Keel-billed Toucan

This bird has the prettiest, most colorful beak. It has so many colors. We saw this bird at Manual Antonio National Park, about 15 0f them at Monteverde and on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica.

3. Black Throated Trogan

This bird is so pretty. It's an amazing bird. It is a relative of the Quetzal.
I saw this bird at Carara, where we took this picture.
2. Fiery-billed Aracari
The Aracari is a relative of the Toucan. We saw this bird at Manuel Antonio.

1. Violaceous Trogan
We snapped this picture of this bird at Carara. I think it is the prettiest bird I've seen. You can not really see the color on this bird because of the reflection of the sun,
but it's head is purple. You can not capture the beauty of this bird through pictures.
