I loved going to Volcano Poas, #47 on our scavenger hunt. It was an amazing experience.
We are learning in school that there are three different kinds of volcanoes. We made them out of clay.
First, is the shield volcano. These volcanoes have the name shield because from above they look like a warrior shield. They are built by fluid lava flows. The average diameter of a shield volcano is 3 - 4 miles. The biggest active volcano is a shield volcano called Mauna Loa.
Second, is the cinder cone volcano. It has steep sides. It can be between 100 and 400 meters tall. Cinder cone volcanoes erupt and everything that comes out (the lava) hardens and creates the cone shape.
Last but not least, is the composite volcano. They are the most violent volcanoes. They can be up to 8,000 feet high. Lava flows out of the cone and through cracks on the side of the volcano. Composite volcanoes are made up of lava and ash. Volcano Poas is a composite volcano.
